TACKLING CRIME & ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
Crime was one of our key priorities when we were elected in April 2003. People weren’t happy with the levels of crime on their streets and frankly neither were we. Through close working with the Police and other agencies we have managed to deliver a huge reduction in crime. Since May 2003 crime has fallen by 20% in Nottingham.
The overall figures sound impressive but in certain areas we have done even better. Since our election we have seen a 70% reduction in Gun Crime, a 43.5% reduction in theft of vehicles and an 80% reduction in street prostitution.
WORKING TOGETHER
Alongside our joint work with the police, we have carried out our own high profile initiative to tackle Crime and Anti-social behaviour, Respect for Nottingham. Through our Respect initiative we have seen a 40% reduction in people reporting anti-social behaviour as a problem. This has partly been driven by our hard line on those that don’t respect their area, with our use of ASBO’s (163 issued since 2005), our efforts to crack down on street drinking, and taking a hard line on our own tenants when necessary, by evicting those convicted of drug offences and removing assured tenancies for problem neighbours. All this has been made possible by Nottingham Labour’s investment in those areas that matter to people, such as the City Council’s own street wardens, with 58 additional wardens being recruited since our election in 2003.
LISTENING TO LOCAL PEOPLE
When we were elected we were told that begging in the city centre was a major problem, through our high profile campaign to encourage people to donate to charity rather than give money directly to beggars and through our use of wardens we oversaw an 83% reduction in begging.
