Radford Councillors, Katrina Bull, Afzal Khan and Mohammad Aslam have been supporting local residents yet again against Big Business. Several months ago residents asked them to lead a ‘review’ of the license held by a multinational brand of convenience shop, located in Radford – holding a 24 hour license to sell alcohol. This was causing high levels of anti-social behaviour including fights in the street, urinating, litter and much worse. The residents finally had enough and with the local councillors, they called for a ‘review of the license’ and asked the Council’s committee of councillors to look into the behaviour and limit the sales of alcohol until 11pm.
After over one year of collating evidence of anti- social behaviour by ringing the Council’s 24 hour hotline, 915 202020, Cllr Katrina Bull and the residents won the review which has meant the shop stops selling alcohol at 11pm – so residents have a much better environment to live
in. However, residents soon learnt that the situation NEXT DOOR might get worse. A multi-national deep fried chicken take-away shop wanted to be able to sell their hot food until 12am in the morning – right next door. This new shop had already been causing much in different sorts of anti-social behaviour. So, when the take-away applied for a later license, residents asked their Labour councillors again to represent them and object.
After collating evidence – photos of litter, ringing the ASB hotline, keeping a diary of incidences – residents & their councillors presented their thick log of reasons not to give the late license. And again, the Licensing Committee after hearing all the evidence and legal opinion, did not grant the license.
Another success for local people!! Labour Councillor Katrina Bull said “you can make a stand. If there is a licensed premise causing YOU a problem, get your neighbours together, make a diary of incidences, ring the council’s hotline on 915 202020 and let us know of your problems. But the key is to keep a log of every small incidence of noise, litter etc that you can. You can win against irresponsible business- owners and make our community a better place
