Sherwood’s local Labour councillors, Penny Griggs, Brian Parbutt and Jane Urquhart are working hard to develop the role of one of our key local facilities, Woodthorpe Park, and put it at the centre of local community activities. “Woodthorpe Park is such a superb asset for Sherwood and Carrington that we need to make sure that we make the most of it as a local resource” said local councillor Penny Griggs. The park was used for the first ever Sherwood Festival on 21st June, which was a great success – even with some unfriendly weather!Due to local support there will be an ever bigger and better event in 2009.Many local people and groups were involved in the festival, which was co-ordinated by the council’s Neighbourhood Management Team. It was supported a grant from the new £30,000 fund for projects in Sherwood which is held by Sherwood’s local councillors.
Woodthorpe Grange Park (to give it the full title) has been owned and run by the City Council since 1921 and contains many unusual features – including the railway tunnel train sculpture which reflects the fact that the Nottingham Suburban railway split the gardens to the then private house in half when built in 1889.The tropical house is also well worth a visit, and the thousands and thousands of bedding plants that have made Nottingham a many times winner of the Britain in Bloom competition are grown in the greenhouses at Woodthorpe.
Another new development in for Woodthorpe is the establishment of a park users group so that local people can be more closely involved in the management of the park and pursue improvement schemes and opportunities for external funding. If anyone would like to become involved in the group please contact John Simpson, Senior Park Ranger at Woodthorpe Grange.
