New Community Centre for Bestwood Estate

Campaigning by local residents and Councillors has paid off with a new £250,000 community centre has been given the go-ahead to replace the Leen Valley Community Centre on Arnold Road, Bestwood Estate. The new centre will be built on land next to the current centre.

The money for the new centre is being raised through the sale of the old site, a £50,000 grant from Waste Recycling Environmental Limited (Wren) and the City Council.

Coun Brian Grocock, ward councillor and chairman of Wren, said: “We were approached 18 months ago for a grant, the application was accepted and this centre will be a positive contribution to the local community.” And Bestwood councillor Mick Wildgust added: “It is all about getting people in the community meeting with each other. This is a way forward. There are a lot of people in the area who have been asking for a community centre. I want to see it fully used.”

The new building will become a centre for youth groups and as a meeting place for older people. Local residents are hoping that the new building will encourage more people to get involved in community activities and groups and will serve as a base for health and community projects.
