Nottingham Labour retains control of the City Council

Nottingham Labour increased their majority on the council from 38 seats to 42. The Lib Dems lost two seats seat and the Tories lost one and won one. All the independent councillors, who where originally elected as Lib Dems in 2003, stood down at the election.

Jon Collins, leader of the Labour Group, said “This is a great result. We where the only political party that put a comprehensive and detailed manifesto before the electorate. Whilst the Liberals and Tories played games with the public, we engaged in a discussion about the future.”

The Liberals lost seats in The Arboretum and Basford wards to Labour whilst the Tories lost a seat in Dales Ward. David Mellen, newly elected Labour Councillor for Dales Ward, said ” I think local people have supported us because we clearly spelled out our ambitions for the city, highlighted the importance of working in partnership with local communities and made that central to the way that we want the city council to work.”
