Jon Collins, Labour Leader of Nottingham City Council, welcomed David Blunkett MP to a meeting of Labour Party activists and residents of Nottingham. David Blunkett was helping launch Nottingham Labour’s manifesto for the City Council Elections on the 3rd May.David Blunkett knows Nottingham well, he worked closely with the Labour Group to see the introduction of laws to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour and on a personal level has two sons who have lived and worked in the city recently.Labour launches 2007 ManifestoLabour launches 2007 manifesto

“Nottingham Labour has made huge strides in tackling the issues that concern local people, and has clearly articulated a vision for the future of the city. Investment in communities, schools and services are at the core of this. As a Party we have to make sure that local people know that these things only happen by choice and not by chance.

My own experience in Sheffield tells me that a Liberal/Tory alliance will set the city back, they always promise anything to get elected and then cut services and fail to deliver. Experience elsewhere also backs this up. In Camden, Liberals/Tories after deciding to cut services for the young and older people, then decided to cut night time street-cleaning for Convent Garden and other busy areas of central London”.Labour launches 2007 Manifesto

The meeting was the public launch of a manifesto that had been worked on for over a year, with many consultation meetings held with city residents, business’ and organisations. Chairing the meeting was Cllr Katrina Bull who said “ We are committed to the city and it’s people, and spending so much time talking with them about their issues, ensures that together we can deliver the services they want and need. Nottingham Labour is the only party in Nottingham that has actively worked with local people to deliver policies and a strategy that makes sense.”

Commenting on the Manifesto, Jon Collins said “We know what local people want us to achieve over the next four years. Our big project will be to improve every neighbourhood in the city by investing our public services, schools, streets, safety and housing. We’re proud of Nottingham and what has been achieved over the last few years. And unlike our opponents will never run down the city for a few cheap votes. The choice in May is stark a clear vision and strong leadership from labour or incompetent indecision from a Lib Dem/Tory Alliance.”
