Bringing empty dwellings back into use

Hassan Ahmed, Labour candidate for Berridge, has had a briefing on the powers given to the Council through Empty Dwelling Management Orders. It is estimated that there over 5.000 empty privately owned residential properties in Nottingham and half of these have been out of use for longer than 6 months. Empty properties could be housing people, affect the value of neighbouring properties since they are often poorly maintained, and have been a concern raised by local people.

The new powers introduced from April 2006 allow councils to take over the management of some residential properties that have been empty for more than six months. The council does not take ownership of the property but can take possession and let the home to somebody who needs it.

Commenting, Hassan Ahmed said “The new law finally gives the council some powers to force rogue landlords to look after and let their properties. Landlords can’t be allowed to keep family homes empty and just wait for their value to increase when houses are in high demand.”

If you have a concern about an empty property near you then contact the Berridge Labour Team and we will take the matter up with the Council.
