Labour Team members have welcomed the dramatic drop in crime in the Meadows as announced by Police Area Commander John Woodward at a public meeting at the end of January.

Year on year crime statistics show burglaries down from 261 in 2005/6 to 120 in 2006/7, vehicle crime down from 202 to 134 and total crimes down by some 30% from 1518 to 1024.Ian MacLennan of the Labour Team said “Detection rates unfortunately remain low in some categories but this highlights the success of and the need for more crime prevention measures.”
There should be no complacency however. These figures give a firm foundation for further progress in the coming months and years with the installation of more security gates in the old Meadows, increasing the number of community wardens and initiatives such as making Smartwater available to local residents to mark household appliances and deter potential thieves.

Nottingham’s Labour Council working in partnership with local community groups and police are continuing to develop effective working relations to jointly tackle crime. Events such as the recent week of action helped to build community confidence, but also ensure that local agencies work together for the benefit of local residents. Current progress is pleasing so far, but much more needs to, and will be, done.
