Nottingham Labour has challenged the City Conservative and Liberal Democrat alliance to declare where they stand on the future of Nottingham’s Tram system.
The two groups are working together ahead of the City Council elections in May. Should they jointly take control of the City Council following the
elections, the future of the Tram would be thrown into doubt.
City Conservatives have opposed Line One of the Tram and have openly stated that they are against the expansion of Lines Two and Three. But Liberal
Democrats have taken the opposite view and seem to support the Tram.
These contradictory positions would spell chaos and indecision and threaten the future of the Tram system acknowledged to be the best in the Country.
The position of the City Tories is also directly contrary to the National Conservatives and their Leader, David Cameron who believes Trams
are a good idea.
Labour City Council Leader, Jon Collins says: “The Tories and the Liberals have joined forces to try to take control of the City at May’s elections. Yet, on the issue of the Tram, like many other issues, they hold completely different views. This has all the makings of a disaster for Nottingham should this pair take control.
The future of the Tram is one of the most important issues for Nottingham and Labour has taken the lead, not only in making it happen but
also pushing for its expansion to help give us the cleaner, greener and sustainable public transport system we need in Nottingham.
Even the Tory Leader supports Trams. Yet the City Tories want to turn their backs on around £350m of Government cash, the jobs and opportunities Lines 2 and 3 will bring for local people and the huge boost this will bring to our public transport network.
Not only that, but the Tory stance could threaten the viability of the existing Line One of the Tram here in Nottingham putting the City back years
and squandering the opportunities we have created.
We have seen how Tory/Liberal alliances have brought indecision and chaos to Cities like Birmingham, Derby and Leicester. To have this repeated in Nottingham would be a huge blow for our residents. That’s why we want the Tories and Liberal Democrats to clearly spell out their positions on this vital issue so Nottingham people can make an informed choice at the
forthcoming elections.
